Fear of Nuclear Power
Some people think that nuclear power is not safe. I spent 3 Years assigned to a nuclear powered submarine. In that 3 years, I learned about just how safe the sub was. Since 17 Jan. 1955, to the this day, the Us has lost only 2 Of Over 100 nuclear power subs. Neither of these losses was caused by the reactor. In fact periodic checks of the water surrounding the wrecks has ahown no sign of a significant increase in backround radiation. I have heard stories of men going into the reactor compartment tunnel, during times when the reactor was at full power, just to say they did it. No harm came of it. in fact, I have gotten more radiation to the sun, than from the reactor on my sub. A joke was played on me when I went to sea for the first time. It is cutomary to pass the word "The reactor is critical" over the general anouncing circuit. This means that the reactor is producing enough fission to make steam. It does not mean anything bad is going to happen. But, I didn't know this. Someone yells "We're all gonna die!!" Now I look back on it and it was funny, but, then it was not so funny. It was fun using it later, and rewarding to get the same effect. What is the most abundant source of renewable energy? Hydro? Wrong. Solar? Wrong. Wind? Wrong. That would be nuclear energy. We could recycle neclear waste. That way it would not have to be stored. What if there is an earthquake? It that happens the plant will shut down all by itself. Everything from a loss of power to a worker putting a switch in the wrong position. All us Navy nuclear vessels,(or as Mr. Checkov would say, "Wessel"), have to pass a safety examination. The entire crew is involved one way or an other. If the ship or sub fails the exam, two things will imediately happen. 1) The Captain is releived. 2) The ship or sub will stay welded to the pier until it does pass. All leaves and liberty will be cancelled. So far, to the best of my knowledge, No ship or sub, has ever failed. So, why don't we build more power plants? |
